Differing from the common method in leagues where the bottom 3 teams are relegated and the top 3 in the second league are promoted, the Bundesliga system employs a two legged play off system instead. Meaning that the bottom 2 two teams of the Bundesliga get relegated and the top 2 teams of 2.Bundesliga get promoted instantly. The team at 16th place gets a chance to prevent relegation by playing against the team at 3rd place which has a chance of promotion. Therefore spot 16 is known as the relegation play-off place. Teams have the chance to play each other during the season which runs from August to May, the league is ended on match-day 34.
