Being one of the most prestigious and competitive leagues in the world, La Liga is the highest division of association football in Spain’s (Football League System) ‘Liga de Fútbol Profesional’. La Liga is competed by total of 20 teams that play home and away matches over the course of 38 Match Days spanning from August to May. The round-robin format gives 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. The team at the top of the league 'table' at the end of each season is crowned champions. The last three in the Primera División are relegated and switch places with the top three teams in the Segunda Divisón. Only three of the founding clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, have never been relegated to the second division.

Beginning in April 1927, local sports director José María Acha first proposed the idea of forming a national league in Spain. After finalising the size and inclusive teams for the league, the Real Federación Española de Fútbol agreed upon the ten teams who would form the first 'Primera División' in 1929; Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Club de Getxo, Real Union, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Europa, and Racing de Santander. Throughout La liga, civil war and political controversy have formed the best of rivalries between clubs, most notably the 'El Clásico' between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF.
