The Premier League is the league that is at the top of the English League system and is arguably the toughest footballing league in the world. 20 teams compete over a course of 38 matches from August to May. The three teams with the lowest amount of points at the end of the season get relegated to the league below the Premier League (the English Football League), switching places with the three teams who got the most points in that league. The top three teams at the end of the Premier League season secure places in the Champions League group stage for the following season, with the fourth place team able to qualify for a spot in the group stage.

The Premier League was founded in 1992, ahead of the 1992/93 season, and was named the FA Premier League. Since then, the league has experienced several name changes, which has corresponded to the names of its sponsors. It was called FA Premier League (1992-1993), FA Carling Premiership (1993-2001), FA Barclaycard Premiership (2001-2004), FA Barclays Premiership (2004-2007), Barclays Premier League (2008-2016) until it just became the Premier League (following the 2015/16 season).
